22. Precautions in cold weather

1) Fuel
   In cold weather, volatility of fuel will deteriorate, poor starting will easily be caused. If fuel is kept unused in fuel tank through one summer season, it is recommended to replace fuel with new one, because volatility is deteriorated and mixing ratio is changed improperly. Be sure to use 2-cycle engine oil. It is recommended to use genuine Tohatsu engine oil (Mixing ratio 30:1)
2) Vacuum pump oil
   The lower temperature, the higher the viscosity of the oil. As a result, suction of engine oil into vacuum pump will deteriorate, extending vacuuming time and causing premature wear of vacuum pump. The Mobil oil (SAE 30), when mixed with gasoline (10% to 15%), allows low-temperature use at -10 to -20°C.
3) Battery
   a. Battery cable connections
    If cable connection is loosened at terminal or is corroded, battery power will consume in vain, thus deteriorating discharge performance. It is recommended to keep terminals clean and apply a small amount of great to terminals.
   b. Electrolytic liquid
    Electrolytic liquid is evaporated and its liquid level lowers. If plates are exposed to air, their capacity is lost and battery cannot serve practically. Be sure to keep liquid at specified level at all times by adding distilled water.
   c. Charging
    Be sure to always keep battery charged in good condition, especially when starting by battery will become difficult in cold season.

   d. Freezing Prevention
    If water is left in pump body or vacuum pump, they can be frozen in cold temperature, leading to turning difficulty and crack. This means pump will be seriously damaged, allowing no practical use. This also applies to the cylinder of a water-cooled engine.
     
      To avoid freezing trouble:
      1. Completely drain water from pump body and cylinder by opening drain cock on them.
      2. After completing draining, close each cock, add anti-freeze or alcohol (0.3 to 0.5 liter) into water suction port of pump body, close water suction port, idle pump, run vacuum pump for 10 - 20 seconds, and then stop engine.
     
      As a result, inside of pump body, vacuum pump, vacuum pipe, etc. should be protected against freezing.
Another way is to create vacuum condition, and let anti-freeze be sucked into inside pump body through drain pipe of vacuum pump after stopping engine. It is recommended to apply anti-freeze to discharge valve, etc.
